As the temperatures start to drop and the mornings get darker, it can be tempting to stay tucked under the blankets instead of heading down to the shed. But for many rowers, winter is actually one of the best times of the year to be on the water.
Here in Queensland and Northern NSW, we’re lucky to enjoy a winter rowing season that still offers beautiful conditions, competitive racing, and some of the best sunrises of the year. Winter also brings a fantastic calendar of events for rowers of all ages and abilities.
A Busy Winter Racing Calendar
The winter rowing season is packed with opportunities to race, challenge yourself, and stay connected with the rowing community.
One of the highlights of the Queensland winter calendar is the Brisbane River Winter Racing Series 2026, which features five rounds of club racing followed by a Grand Final. The series starts with time trials before progressing into exciting head-to-head racing for Eights, Quads, and Fours.

Why Winter is the Perfect Time to Improve
Winter rowing isn’t just about racing, it’s where many rowers make their biggest gains.
Without the intensity of peak championship season, winter allows athletes to focus on:
- Technique refinement
- Aerobic fitness
- Crew cohesion
- Confidence in smaller boats
- Trying new combinations
- Consistency in training
The calmer water conditions often found on winter mornings can also create the ideal environment for technical improvement.
Staying Motivated During Winter
Every rower experiences dips in motivation during winter, especially when alarms go off before sunrise. The key is finding ways to stay connected to your goals, your crew, and your club community.
Focus on Routine
Motivation comes and goes, but routine builds consistency. Most rowers will tell you that once you’re on the water, you never regret getting up.
Set Small Goals
Winter is the perfect time to focus on achievable milestones:
- Entering your first regatta
- Improving technique
- Rowing more consistently
- Trying a single or double
- Supporting newer rowers
- Building fitness
Embrace the Social Side
Masters rowing is about far more than results. Coffee after training, travelling to regattas together, and supporting each other on race day are all part of what makes the sport so rewarding.
Try Something New
Winter racing can be a great opportunity to experiment with different crews, boat classes, or race formats in a lower-pressure environment.
More Than Just Competition
One of the biggest strengths of Masters rowing is that there is a place for everyone.
Whether you’re highly competitive, returning to rowing after years away, or recently completed a Learn to Row program, winter regattas provide an encouraging environment to get involved and gain experience.
At Gold Coast Masters Rowers, we continue to encourage both new and existing rowers to participate throughout the winter season. Racing is not just for elite athletes, it’s an opportunity to challenge yourself, support your crew mates, and enjoy being part of a strong club community.
Because winter rowing isn’t just about staying fit during the colder months, it’s about building friendships, resilience, confidence, and club spirit that carries through the entire season.
So rug up, embrace the early mornings, and enjoy the magic of winter rowing.
